It’s National Sweater Day! 🧣❄️
Back to newsHappy National Sweater Day everyone!
National Sweater Day was started 16 years ago by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) in Canada to challenge Canadians to turn down their thermostats and don sweaters instead as a way of reducing energy consumption during the winter months. National Sweater Day now happens every year on the first Thursday of February and is celebrated from coast to coast to coast. This year, Green Schools NS held our yearly “15-minute Sweater Day Virtuals” and have been engaging with classrooms across the province, teaching them all about Sweater Day!
My favourite sweaters are my wool sweaters, and I have three that I keep coming back to. Today, I’m wearing my green lamb’s wool sweater that I thrifted from Frenchy’s in Bridgewater. You may have also seen me don my red and grey wool sweater during the winter virtual season, pictured below. Finally, this year I’ve busted out my blue fine alpaca wool sweater that I also thrifted at Frenchy’s in Bridgewater. These sweaters are made of natural fibres, so they don’t contribute to the microplastics issue, they were all bought used and therefore didn’t contribute to the scourge of the global fast fashion industry, and by golly they are WARM! I could turn down my thermostat at least 3 degrees while I wear these sweaters, and so they help me reduce my winter energy use.
What’s your favourite sweater?
