Sun’s Out, Lights Out: Springing Forward with Origami Tulips! 🌷☀️

Back to news

With the arrival of spring in Nova Scotia, our classrooms are getting a lot brighter! To celebrate the upcoming time change, Green Schools hosted a province-wide “Sun’s Out, Lights Out” Craftiner, turning the transition to Daylight Saving Time into a creative lesson on energy conservation.

Why do we “Spring Forward”?

While losing an hour of sleep can be tough, we shared a bright secret with students: Daylight Saving Time actually started over a century ago as a way to save energy. By shifting our clocks, we align our daily routines with the Sun—the giant, free lamp in the sky!

Creativity Through Upcycling

During the craftinar, students from across the province put the “Sun’s Out, Lights Out” motto into practice. Using natural light from their classroom windows instead of overhead electric lights, students engaged in upcycling—the art of turning old materials into something beautiful.

Using leftover paper scraps, participants practices the mindful art of origami to fold vibrant spring tulips. It was a perfect example of how we can stay entertained and creative without relying on screens or electricity.

Small Changes, Big Impact

Having more sunshine after school isn’t just a mood booster; it’s a win for the planet too! We encouraged our Green Schools community to keep the momentum going by:

  • Doing homework by a window to soak up natural light
  • Trading screen time for outdoor play or board games
  • Continuing to create crafts from recycled materials at home

Every tulip folded was a reminder that when we use the Sun wisely, we help protect our beautiful province. Happy Spring, Nova Scotia! ☀️🌸
