Green Schools Joins Discovery Centre’s Future of Efficiency Free Access Day

Back to news

Green Schools NS proudly took part in Discovery Centre’s “Future of Efficiency” Free Access Day — a dynamic and inspiring event co-hosted with Efficiency Nova Scotia that brought together sustainability, innovation, and community learning under one roof.

Engagement Officers Elisa and Tao joined the event alongside representatives from various sectors of the green economy. Together, they welcomed students from five different schools, sparking curiosity and dialogue around Nova Scotia’s clean energy goals and career pathways in the green economy. The event was open to families and visitors of all ages, with interactive booths, live demonstrations, and expert insights across every floor of the Discovery Centre.

With Green Schools, students explored the basics of climate change, energy efficiency, and Nova Scotia’s Net Zero 2050 target. Participants were drawn to a hands-on team challenge simulating the planning of an energy-efficient building. Each group of students took on rotating roles — from project managers and designers to builders, installers, and analysts — collaboratively building their prototype and learning how each role contributes to sustainable construction. The activity offered a practical glimpse into the skills and teamwork involved in the green building sector.

It was particularly encouraging to hear students reflect on how their values connect with future career choices. Many expressed interest in environmental fields they hadn’t previously been considered, and several said they hadn’t realized the breadth of opportunities available right here in Nova Scotia.

Events like this not only introduce young people to emerging technologies but also remind us how education, sustainability, and innovation intersect. We’re excited to continue supporting these conversations — in schools, in communities, and in events just like this, that move us toward a more efficient and equitable future.
