Learning Energy Efficiency at Whycocomagh Education Centre

Back to stories

In early May, Shandel Brown dropped in at Whycocomagh Education Centre to talk about energy with grade five and six classes. As the Green Schools Engagement Officer for Cape Breton, Shandel had brought these students a presentation on energy last year. Now that the students are covering the electricity curriculum, Shandel was invited again to bring fun and applicable hands-on activities about energy. These students enjoyed plugging in different items to discover how much energy they use. You might be surprised at the results of the experiment! Did you know that fridges and freezers use more energy if they are more than 10 years old?

Students learned about the difference between static and current electricity, and about the sources of energy. To minimize human impacts on the Earth, these individuals shared lots of great ideas for how to waste less energy, at home and school!
