Today is Buy Nothing Day!

Back to news

Buy Nothing Day is an international, informal annual event dedicated to raising awareness of overconsumption. The tagline is “Participate by not participating!”

Something not many people know is that Buy Nothing Day began right here in Canada with Vancouver-based “culture-jamming” magazine Adbusters, a not-for-profit publication fighting back against commercial forces. Here’s their message from their website today:

“Join millions of us in over 60 countries on November 25, 2016 for Buy Nothing Day and see what it feels like to take a stand against corporate domination. Then, as we enter the holiday season, consider what it might mean to celebrate a holiday that isn’t driven by commercial forces. If you are going to buy, make a choice and go local, independent, or make something. Lets take back our lives and stop buying into the consumerist machine.”

This certainly fits in with our philosophy here at Green Schools, so put your money away and have a lovely Buy Nothing Day!
